It "can" be done. I took the pump off of one with the rad on, but ended up taking the rad off to put it back together. If I recall correctly I took the pump, fan and shroud off all at one time. (This was back when I didnt know anything about tractors, like maybe 9 or 10. My Dad was impressed by my ingenuity.)
When I rebuilt the one on my I4, I took the rad off more or less to keep from damaging the rad.
