Mike - If you have a VOM or DMM use it to measure the coil primary resistance:
Disconnect both primary wires then measure across the coil primary terminals. A 6 volt coil will show around 1.6 ohms, give or take a few tenths. A 12 volts coil's resistance will be double that (3.2 ohms or so...)
