You are over charging the battery, and not only will that harm the battery, the gasses venting out the caps are explosive, and could ignite, exploding the battery. The vents in the caps are only big enough for normal charging rates. I think a 47 will have the 3 brush generator, so adjusting the charge rate is accomplished by moving the third brush. You will need an ammeter to set the charge rate. If you have the 3 brush generator, the light switch should have 4 positions, and the first 2 are low and high charge rate. If you have the 3 position switch, you probably have a 2 brush generator, and the charge rate is adjusted automaticly by the voltage regulator. In this case, it may be sticking, or no longer functioning.
