If she is getting hard to start there are several things that come into play here and timing is not that much of and issue . (1) Low compression (2) cranking pressure on the injection pump, (3) cracking pressure and spray pattern of the injectors , (4) cranking speed of the starter ,(5) condition of the batterys and the size of the cables to the batterys and starter . Also you could have a cam going out and this will not allow the valves to open as they should . To give a good determination of your problem i would have to see for myself what it was really doing at the time of a cold start . If the tractor is throwing white smoke before and shortly after startup then she is getting tired and needs a major rebuild and not and in frame . As that more then likely has been done at one point in time already and now it needs to come out and gone thru totality .But that is my way and may not be what someone else calls a total rebuild . So doing a compression test and having the pump rebuilt along with the injectors is a start .
