Tension from the centering spring on the lever control mechanism and the spring in drive selector valve holds lever against side of quadrant. That is about it. It should take some amount of effort to move lever side to side from both springs. In transmission itself all you are moving is a cam plate and it is pretty well balanced. I will throw this in. That cable operated mechanism is not nearly as nice as the old rod type of earlier model tractors. So many spots to get sloppy. You may take a look to see if someone has added a return spring to keep all the free movement in one direction and that would possibly make your lever creep more. Just follow up where the cable operates the valve .
