If it is in front of the fuel filler cap, it is a hole for the starting gasoline tank. This tank was used on all distillate (tractor fuel), and kerosene tractors. The operator started the engine on gasoline, then switched to Distillate for reasons of economy (at the time, the tractor fuel was much cheaper than gasoline. It was also smelly and less powerful, but cheap ruled. Once started and warmed on gasoline, it was switched. When shutting it off, the Distillate was shut off and the tractor was allowed to run out of fuel. This allowed gasoline to be introduced into the carb to start it the next time. JimN
