400 rear seal

I took the old engine real oil seal out of the retainers and put the new halves in. When I had them pressed in all the way, there was still about a half inch sticking above the retainer. There is no way that both the halves will go together so is it alright to trim the seals down so that they are only about 1/8 of and inch above the surface of the retainer? I don't see why this would hurt if it still seals tight. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks for any input.
