If I understand correctly you replaced your original solenoid with a "Ford style" solenoid.
Original solenoid was probably voltage activated. One large post on solenoid connected to battery other side to starter. Small post on top went to activating coil whose other end was grounded to solenoid case. Start button applied voltage to the small terminal to activate. Other than for mounting, the solenoid doesn't care which side goes to battery and which side to starter.
"Ford style" activation is opposite. One of large terminals is marked "BAT" and must connect to battery. Other large post goes to starter. One side of activating coil is tied internally to "Bat" side, other end of coil is tied to top activating post. To activate solenoid you ground the top post.
For safety sake, double check that your tractor is out of gear, with ignition switch off, disconnect wire from small solenoid post, then ground that post and see if it activates.
