Hi, I believe the fuel guage sender unit provides a ground to the fuel guage and the other connector on the fuel guage will go to a 12V source that will come from the ignition switch there probably is a fuse on the 12V side. The wiring for the fuel guage sender unit probably goes thru the connector at the rear of the seat under the platform. The ground point is usually a wire that has a lug that is on one of the bolts at the back of the seat that holds the platform on. The connector can be troublesome as well as the ground lug not making good connection due to rust and dirt.
