The manual says to switch it back over to gas before shutting down. That's what I always try to do, because it appears to me to be easier to start the next time. However, I think the two really important points are to not shut it down when it's blazing hot (a fast idle for a while works for me), and to make sure that when it's all said and done that the compression release lever is in the diesel position. As mentioned in a previous post, that allows the starting valves to cool on their seats, rather than warping.
