During the SMTA production run, IH had at least two ID tag suppliers. That is a common tactic among mfgs. They need competitive bids and an alternate source.
One supplier used inferior ink/paint and these tags are totally bare of anything but the stamped digits.
I have seven SMTAs. This is the best tag that I have. I thought about cleaning it with diesel fuel but I am afraid any cleaning might accelerate the weathering.
It should also be noted that there were two sets of stamping dies. You are looking at the larger size. The smaller set was about about one half as large.
I would do as advised by others. Just order a new tag from OEM.
