Retcol: If it's tyrods you can see that, just turn the steering wheel, watch the tyrods and wheels. If there is end movement in the steering shaft then it has bad bearings. If the shaft is tight don't fix it.
If you see a cracked steering box, walk the other way. If someone used it that rough you don't want rest of the tractor anyhow. In all my 67 years, I've never seen a cracked steering box, block will break first.
Usually 90% of steering slop will occur in two woodruff keys on steering box vertical shaft. Within the box the half gear is keyed to shaft, outside on the bottom steering control arm is keyed to shaft. I've seen those two keys cause 1.5 turns of free travel on steering wheel, with all other items tight. So basically, if you can't see it happen, woodruff keys are the culpert.
