The shaft only wears where the seal or oring go, thus the shop can get an accurate measurement. A GOOD shop can do that, some of the old geezer ones (I'm a geezer) can't. There are modern techniques that can be used that avoid losing the temper. One local guy said he could braze mine and turn it down. I asked him how long it would last. "He said to braze it you have to get it HOT". I went elsewhere and had the other one enlarge the shaft hole for a speedi sleeve -- necessary for an oring, but not a seal. Not as good as new, but they last a long time.
