The 786 was introduced to give IH a row crop tractor at 80 PTO hp. At the same time the 886 went from 86 to 90 PTO hp. Essentially, the 786 was a turned-down 886. Both models had the same features and had the same options offered (MFD and full cab). I think units for full cabs for either model were less in quantity than those sold on 986,1086 and the larger models. Ran one at the college farm when I was in school (It was maybe a year old). Overall, I liked the way it handles and performed. I never heard the farm manager complain about it. If a bunch of students with different operating habits can not hurt a tractor, that says a lot for it. If you are used to IH tractors from that time, you will find it likable. The only negative may possibly be the 358 motor does not have the raw power like the 414's, 436's do.
