cfitch: You can do it either way. If you want to take front end and engine in separate, unbolt the side rails at both ends, plus front of engine. The rails make great handles, if left loosely bolted to front bolster. On most Farmalls those rails have to be loose at front so back end of rails will clear all parts of the engine. If you leave the top bolts holding engine to clutch housing, that will hold the engine until your ready to remove it.

With a tractor as new as the 504, I expect you'll find threaded holes near top of block for attaching a chain sling.
