For parts too big for an electrlysis bucket or tub, you can find commercial preparations of phosphoric acid that can be brushed on and either rinsed off or left to dry and any residue knocked off with a scotch-brite. They convert the rust to iron phosphate which is much more stable. Kind of the same concept as bluing on a gun. Ospho is one brand, I've seen some unde the Jasco label. Can often be had at HD or Lowes.
