I've been scouting around for axle bearings lately to fix the howl my '49 IH W-4 makes in 5th gear. I've been thinking about it because when I had my axles out, the bearings weren't exactly perfect and the howl gets slightly less noisy for a short time if you grease the outer axle bearings. However, I want to be certain of the cause before spending money on something that doesn't need to be replaced. I've even been told that the big fenders make any howl that much more amplified.
It's perfect in all the lower gears.
Does anyone know if there's a common cause for these symptoms in W-series tractors or even H Farmalls?
