It sound like the splins on the shaft are wore out. To check the shaft, engage The PTO (tractor not running), so when you pull the PTO out the gear will stay on the shaft in the tramission. If you don't engage the PTO the gear will fall down in the tramission, then you have drain the oil and take the whole rear cover off. There are six bolt you need to take out to pull The PTO.
