When I bought my "41 H the very first thing I did was drain and change the fluids. The tranny was all brown water - just like yours.
It should take about 6 gallons of 90 weight transmission oil. If you can, buy the 5 gallon bucket. Its considerably cheaper in bulk.
Keep an eye on the main housing to axle gaskets - Once I changed the fluid, that joint started leaking from the bottom. Apparently, draining the water loosened whatever dirt had collected at the bottom of the gasket opening a nice weep hole.
