A subsoiler is like the ripper tines on a box blade, only longer to reach down and break up the hard-pan in the soil. Haw has a good idea, but I had to take a little different approach because I don't have a single-tine subsoiler for my tractor. I borrowed one and the soil was so hard where I wanted to cut the trench for the underground conduit that the subsoiler wouldn't stay in the ground.

To cut my trench, I took a heavy box blade, hung two tractor front weights on it, and lowered the center ripper tine all the way down. That was heavy enough to cut the first narrow trench about 6 inches deep. Then I filled the trench with water and let it sit overnight.

Next I hooked up my middle-buster, hung the weights on it, and put on a corn plow that is 6 inches wide by 9 inches long. This cut a nice narrow furrow that was plenty deep enough for me to run the conduit.

You make do with what you have.
