I had a bad coil cause a 140 to sputter and stop after it warmed up. Choking wouldn't help though. Similar problems on my 140's always turned out to be something in the ignition sys breaking down. I would start at the coil (does it run OK when 1st started?). Then points, cond, grounding connection on inside of distributor, and don't forget wires and plugs (wire brush them). See any sparks around ign sys at night? I also had a sputter problem when a plug wasn't seating all the way in.
Choking would help if problem is in fuel sys. Make sure screens/strainers are clean and steady flow comes out at carb. Remove the oil bath cannister at the bottom of air intake while running and see if it improves.
Could also be a valve sticking. Many possibilities.
