Hmm, charging the battery may be a red herring. The coil would cool down in the hours that it takes to charge the battery.
It's pretty easy to tell if you've got a charging problem. What does the Amp meter show? If the needle doesn't go to the right when the tractor starts, either the meter is broke or it's not charging. If the meter is broke, replace it. You can get a generic gauge set from Harbor Freight for $16.99 which includes ammeter, oil pressure gauge, and water temperature gauge. They fit and work fine, so there is no excuse for not having working gauges.
Run the tractor until it dies again and feel the coil. You'll likely burn yourself if you're not careful.
Or, just replace the coil. It's not a huge expense. For $30 you can eliminate it as the cause of your problems.
