Might not be the same problem, but I had to clean the rust etc. from the outside of the coil lead on the distributor. However you say your spark is intermedient. Sounds like a bad connection or a bad wire. Why are you hotwiring? Since these tractors are positive ground, did you bring your power from the positive side of the battery or the negative? If you came from the positive side and the rest of the wiring is proper, switching the tractor on could cause a direct short.
