If it blows black smoke, it is too rich, if it backfires out the carb it is too lean. One thing to do before you do anything else is to retorque the intake manifold. I have seen a bunch of loose ones in the past 2 years. After getting it tight, squirt a little gas around the intake passages where they go into the head to make sure there isn't an air leak there.
