According to my boss (an electrical engineer) the lights should require as much amperage at dim as bright, because a resistor is used to reduce voltage, rather than a second element drawing less wattage/amps. HOWEVER, since the 57 year ammeter on the M and my $70 voltmeter agree, I vote with the Red. I don't worry much about the discharge, the generator wasn't hooked up for 4 months, and I only had to charge the battery once. And that was right before I "found" a new regulator.
