Most of the other have told you what you need to know. I went through the same process a couple of weeks ago. For some reason the filters at NAPA didn't all have the gasket. They had to order me one. They stole one out of another filter so I could get by. I bought two filter and gaskets to keep one on hand. The gasket was $.63 if I remember right.
We kept an old ice pick around to chisel them out. I'll bet it is still in the groove.
