I use an IH 300 with live pto to pull a 6 ft Rotary Cutter ($860 & 60 hp gearbox) to bush hog 40 acres of tough grass, weeds and small trees twice a year. I have used it for 6 years with no problems and the blades look like new.
I burned out my live pto clutch which must of been marginal versus the tractor stalling or the shear pin going. Where needed, I don"t cut the full 6 ft, but go down to 3-4 ft cuts or raise the deck.
The IH 300 is rated at 43 pto hp I believe and I think an IH A is around 20 pto hp. Depending on what you are cutting and how close to the ground, I don"t think your IH A could handle anything wider then 48"
