That's the way I did it the last time I jumped a 6V from a 12V. I disconnected the 6V battery entirely(even went so far as to remove it from the tractor, although I doubt that's necessary. Turned out it was shot). I clamped 12V negative to the post on the starter and 12V positive to the fender. The 6V tractor took off running right now. How about polarizing the generator so it will charge? With the dead 6V, where will that fall in the equation? Can you polarize it with 12V running through the system and not damage it in some way? I am curious. In my case above, I got a new 6V battery, hooked it up, and polarized the generator from there. Maybe the best bet is to pull out the 6V battery and put it on the charger overnight?....
