Do you mean backwards as in the #1 plug goes to the rear cylinder?

The neat thing about 4-cylinder engines is that you can time them in either direction. #1 could be the front or the back cylinder. As long as you line that mark on the front pulley up with the pointer with your chosen #1 at TDC on the compression stroke, and connect your wires accordingly, it'll run like a top.

#1 is traditionally the front cylinder, BTW. If you're static timing a rebuilt engine, just for kicks set it up with the rear cylinder as #1. Makes the next guy who gets your tractor's life interesting, if you're into that sort of thing :)
