I don,t have my parts book in here but I think the short cable in the box is one of those flat braided cables, goes from battery to one of the two bolts through the top of batt.box into the top of the switch,light, gauge box. It doesn't work very good in there. I attached mine to a stud on the right gas tank mounting bolt with a couple of those shake proof washers. The starter cable needs somekind of longer lug at the starter. It comes above the starter and then bends back if I remember right.
