If the electrical system is pretty much in good condition, i would leave it as is and repair or replace the regulator--especially if it is delco. A starter and alternator repair shop should be able to help you out. if you are in an area more urban or the stores are all retail oriented, a delco regulator from a 1969 chevy pickup with a 292 would likely be the same as the IH.
