It won't run quite right if the advance isn't right, at least in my experience. Dad fiddled with the timing about a hundred times and just couldn't get the M to run smooth all the way from idle to full with the wrong IH distributor. We think it came off a C or a C113 power unit.
Eventually he had to give up, put the old Prestolite distributor back on and fiddle with that one until the tractor was running right again. He couldn't figure out what kind of distributor it was to get ignition parts, which is why he got the IH distributor from my uncle. It came from Central Tractor back in the early 80's when the OEM distributor wore out and tore its own guts out. Billet.
