After scraping off as much as you can, the best tool to get it really clean is the right angle air grinder you mentioned with a 2 inch gasket removal (3M) wheel. If you're concerned about throwing crud into the crankcase just make sure you run the grinder in a direction where the wheel throws to the outside. The most important thing you can do to ensure the new gasket/pan seal doesn't leak is cleaning the flange oil free now, so after it's shiny clean make sure you wipe it down real well with finish thinner.
