Did a little research, don't have the service bulletins on hydraulics that go back that far, however, did find out some thing I never came across before,in the online parts manuals, the 656 had a high capacity hyd system available that used the 17 gal pump and the larger hyd filter. I didn't realize that. Now this part I knew all along as I dealt with it, that after such and such serial number, IH switched from the standard 12 gal main pump and 7 gal hitch pump to a 17 gal and 9 gal pump, then used different pump mounting plate and drive gear, slowed pumps down to deliver same gal as smaller pump to reduce hyd noise. That part I knew . I saw some put in the larger pumps with the original gear and plate and the cavitation was terrible. Twelve and seven coming through the small filter was over done and then put seventeen and nine through same size filter, well, the larger filter would have really helped I am sure.
