How many clicks does your light switch make when you turn it?
Three = cutout type switch
Two = regulator type switch
This doesn't guarantee that you have a regulator or cutout, but it is an indicator as to what to look for.
Your light switch controls the charge rate on a cutout system. Low charge, high charge, dim lights w/high charge, bright lights w/high charge. If your cutout is working the ammeter should move further to the right when you move to the second position on a cutout system, but the lights should not come on.
