To add to that, the mag's impulse should trip @ TDC, and NO earlier unless you want a busted starter (which could be YOU, if you ever hand-crank it).
As the impulse trips, the rotor will jump ahead to a location near the high-tension terminal of the next cylinder in firing order.
At startup, when the engine is turning fast enough to kick out the impulse, the timing advances, all at once, to full running timing, as determined by the specific impulse components specified for that engine application. (Somewhere in the 25º to 30º BTDC range.)
