Hi Henry, now I see why there was so much confusion over the STOP/START/RUN lever. Some previous owner probably broke the control cable or battery acid leaked onto it. That is a fault with this series of tractors is that if a battery leaks, it leaks onto all wiring and cables below. Re button function, are you referring to the button to the left of the slot(from old STOP/START/RUN lever)? If so this is the ether button. Give this a quick push once you have the engine cranking. To much ether will cause the engine to lock up. If this happens don't attempt to start the tractor for at least 30 minutes.
I have attached a photo(copied from REALDIESEL.COM) of the Bosch injection pump showing the RUN START STOP positions of the fuel control lever. Since someone has modified your 454 then during cold weather starts you will have to make sure the fuel control lever is in the START position just touching the end of the plunger. Also make sure that the modified control lever pushes the fuel control lever all the way forward to the stop adjustment screw. This adjustment screw controls the HP of the engine, so if fuel control lever is not all the way forward the engine will not be developing correct HP.

Still another is the alternator. No doubt using the original generator keeps the tractor pure, but for thos
