The tank is above the pump, but it pumps the fuel over the engine to the injection pump.
As for the pump seal replacement. YES I did scribe a mark and I made sure it was right. It ran good in the summer. The smoke is dark gray when it is trying to start. The glow plug indicator does turn red - both coils. It is a series system so I assume the plugs are ALL glowing.
