I painted over rust...

To make a long story short, I made the mistake of painting over rust on a fender. I sanded it down so it was smooth, but I could still see the discoloration, so some rust survived. I cleaned dust, etc. off and then painted it. My question is: about how long will it take for the rust to show through again? Right now it looks brand new, with no sign of imperfections.
