Hytran is pretty brown and sticky right out of the jug. What fluid are you using that you can't see it on the dipstick? Are you sure there's even fluid in the reservoir?
I've seen new clean engine oil leave a really thin film on the dipstick that's difficult to read on lawn mowers and such. Generally circulating the oil through the engine for a few minutes introduces enough contaminants to darken the oil enough to get a reading.
Even with a clear thin film of oil, if you hold it up to the light and roll the dipstick back and forth you can generally see where the dipstick becomes wet unless you've got poor vision.
You can safely fill the liftall to the brim if you wish.
