One thing I notice when looking at the pictures is that you definitely have water in your rear end oil. I wouldn"t be surprised if it leaked in from the cover bolts. If your tractors stay outside, like ours, make sure that the cap screws are sealed with silicone and that the pipe plug for adding fluid is completely tight and that the threads do seal. Water is hard on both gears and bearings. However, something catastrophic occurred to take two teeth in a row off of that gear. That nut is a possibility, but I would think that it would have stopped the tractor dead when it happened, and not just started knocking. I dunno.
