If you aren't going to do "hard core" farming and want to use it in the winter, a gas would probably be the way to go. The gas tractor is going to be cheaper to purchase than a comparable diesel and like you said, the price of diesel is about a $1/gallon higher. The gas will usually start easier than a diesel in cold weather.
