It can replace the fluid and will probably be OK, but there are issues of operation that do not bode well for the swap. The Hydraulic fluid is (usually of less viscosity, and is often not EP rated, though some may be. 80-90 GL4 EP rated lube has a very stable thick viscosity that assists in slowing the gears when shifting. (especially from neutral into any gear). It also is formulated with extreme pressure additives which help keep the gears from actually touching under stress. The last reason is that the GL4 will be quieter in operation as it absorbs more sound. I hope this helps, Jim
