I'm the "friend" ScottyHOMEy lugged one from Ohio to Maine for.
I've had the cover off it to replace the input shaft seal and check over the sliding gear. He's right, it's dead simple. Two shafts, an input gear, an output gear, an idler gear and a sliding gear.
Input shaft oil seal is a commonly available part, cover gasket is easily made from sheet gasket material.
Only way I can see complications is if one of the gears is badly worn, or if you have a broken shifter arm. The other question I haven't answered yet is how critical/difficult it will be to shim it while installing it, and whether or not the top of the transmission will have to come off to check the lash.
I'd be happy to pop the cover off mine (I haven't put it in yet) and take some pictures for you if you like.
