I think what you're pretty much going to find is that each "family" or "generation" of engines is going to have its own bolt pattern.
The C248-C281 4-cylinders, for example, will have one bolt pattern.
The C152-C175 4-cylinders, another pattern.
The C113-C153 4-cylinders, again.
The C263-C301 6-cylinder, still another.
The D361-D407...
The D414-D466, and the D312 and D360 "American" diesels...
The D310 and D358 "German" diesels...

If it is true that each engine family will have it's own unique bolt pattern, then one could make the logical conclusion that a D361/D407 is different from a DT466, and different from a German engine, which is different from a 263, etc.
