Generally each engine family will have its own unique bolt pattern. There are some occasins though where two generations will match up, such as the M block and the 263, etc. But in general if you r swapping a block from one family for another you will have drill new holes in the block mounting plate, adapt it to mount in frame rails, mix and match the flywheels, timing covers, etc.
