It can also be caused by improperly set/worn points. It can also be caused by a worn distributor - meaning too much side-to-side play in the distributor shaft, thus making it impossible to ever get the points set properly. Take the cap, rotor and dust cover off the distributor and see if you can wiggle the shaft side-to-side. If there is much movement, it will never stop "sputtering" as you say, until the distributor is repaired or replaced. Good luck. mike
