I am real poor help here, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chip in.
Take off the hood right in front of the throttle. Blow all the junk off with an airhose. It's been so long, I kinda forget, but there is a shaft that has an "arm" on it. That broke loose on mine and I had to get it in the right gear, then weld the arm back to the shaft. with the hood off I hope you can work the shifter back and forth and see where the problem lays.
