Yep, happened to me when I converted my Farmall H from generator to an alternator system. I started the tractor and the resistor started smoking, looked at my new voltmeter guage I installed as the tractor was running, and it indicated the system was charging at 14.5 volts. So all was well, it quite smoking after 5 minutes, like they have all said.
