Can't remember for sure---but try sitting the starter nose up & using a suitable size box or open end wrench, drive the end collar down with light taps of a hammer. There should be a wire ring under the end collar that needs to be taken off. If this isn't correct for this style of starter, someone else will jump in here & set things straight.
